Spirit of Tasmania

Sailing on the Spirit of Tasmania with a 4-Year-Old: Our Family Bunk Cabin Adventure

Our adventure kicked off bright and early as we set sail on the Spirit of Tasmania from Geelong, VIC to Devonport, TAS. With our lively 4-year-old in tow!

We splurged on a 4-bunk family cabin (cabin 8005, right at the front of the ship), and let me tell you—it was absolutely worth it! Even on a day sail, having the convenience and comfort of a private space was a game-changer, especially when you're juggling a young child. The cabin came with some great perks:

  • Linen provided: Fresh bedding and towels
  • Bed rails on the top bunks: A lifesaver for peace of mind with little ones.
  • Private ensuite: Complete with a hot, powerful shower

BYOP – Bring Your Own Pillow!

While the bedding was provided, if you prefer fluffy pillows, we suggest bringing your own! And don't forget, there’s no WiFi in the cabins, so be sure to load up on offline entertainment for the kiddos.

Tips for Comfort & Entertainment Onboard

  • No fridge in the cabins, so if you're bringing snacks or drinks, a cooler bag is a must. We packed a few essentials for the trip, and it worked out great.
  • No tea or coffee-making facilities in the cabin, but the ship has a convenience store and a restaurant/bar where you can grab hot drinks and snacks.

Smooth Sailing (Mostly!)

The journey was relatively smooth, though traveling with a lively 4-year-old certainly kept us on our toes! Our little one was fascinated by the view from our porthole, watching the waves and pointing out every passing ship.

Final Thoughts: Worth the Splurge!

In the end, having a cabin for the day sail was a decision we’ll never regret. It gave us a quiet space to relax, recharge, and keep our little one entertained without the hustle and bustle of the main ship areas. If you're traveling with children, splurging on a cabin is totally worth it for the comfort, convenience, and peace of mind it provides.

So, if you're thinking about taking the Spirit of Tasmania with your family, we highly recommend booking a cabin. It makes the journey that much smoother, and trust me—when traveling with kids, every bit of convenience counts!
